Designer Will Breaux turned his long-time dream of building his perfect home into a reality by constructing a house made entirely from shipping containers. Located on McGowen Street in Houston, Texas, Breaux’s incredible residence consists of 11 shipping containers that form a three-story, 2,500 square foot home, complete with a spacious rooftop deck that offers a stunning view of the city.
Breaux had envisioned creating his own home since the early 2000s. However, finding someone who could bring his unique vision to life proved to be a challenge. He struggled to find the right design team that aligned with his ideas and goals for the project. Frustrated by the setbacks, he made the bold decision to take matters into his own hands. “I began looking at projects that were being built that I liked,” Breaux explained on his personal blog. He ultimately decided to design the house himself after parting ways with a team that failed to meet his expectations in 2011.
The concept of using shipping containers as the building blocks for his home stood out to Breaux for several reasons. Shipping containers are incredibly strong, fire-resistant, and durable, making them an ideal material for construction. Additionally, their natural ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, including hurricanes, made them a perfect choice for Breaux’s Houston-based home, where hurricanes are a frequent concern. Although he had no formal experience in construction, Breaux was determined to learn everything he could about container architecture. He spent countless hours researching and educating himself on the best practices for container-based construction. With a clear vision and a 3D sketch of his dream home, he began bringing his design to life.
Through dedication and hard work, Breaux managed to assemble the containers into a three-story structure that includes ample living space, modern amenities, and a beautiful rooftop deck. Each level is meticulously designed to maximize the use of space, creating an open and airy living environment. The interior is a blend of industrial and contemporary design, featuring high ceilings, large windows, and minimalistic yet stylish furniture. Every detail, from the flooring to the lighting fixtures, was thoughtfully selected to complement the overall design.
